Photography

As a boy in the late 80’s I was handed my very first camera to take on our family vacation to Colorado. This camera was the Mickey-Matic 110 Kodak camera. This is where I got my start in photography. I moved on to a couple 35mm Vivatar cameras. They didn’t last too long and I was too hard on them. I really started enjoying photography more when I got a Minolta 35mm camera with zoom lens.

I started taking pictures of sun sets, storms and other landscape pictures. By then I was only a 6th grader. This camera lasted me many years up until high school. I took Photo 1 and got my first 35mm SLR Canon camera. My knack for landscape and black & white photography started. I became a photographer for our school yearbook and newspaper. After high school I continued my education in photography. I attended and graduated from KAW Area Technical School, completing a coarse on photo technology. In early 2003 Columbia Records recording artiest The Ataris hand picked my photograph to be in the booklet of their major label debut ‘So Long Astoria’. The photograph can also be found in a DVD, music video, and even on a commercial promoting the album.

In late 2004 I decided to put all my skills and education to work . With the investment of a website
and a new Canon digital SLR camera I started Before We Spark Photography. In early 2005 the site made an official launch. You can see I have been interested in photography most of my life. Photos I have taken have been used on Lawrence.com, Lazer.com, Rockkansas.com, The Lawrence Journal World, and The Fluxuation Myspace page (James Dewees from Reggie And The Full Effect).

Music

In 1999 I started working for local band Effigy. I ran the bands website I also sold merch and promoted shows. The band later evolved into The Primetime Heroes. I continued working for the band up until January 2005. The band disbanded later that year. In that time I learned how to book and promote a band.

At the same time I also co-hosted a radio show. That show was The Lazer Local Music Show on KLZR Lazer 105.9fm. We showcased the best in local acts in the Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, Kansas City, and even some regional acts. I worked on the show from 2001 up until its end in 2005. This is where I learned even more about the music bizz. Promoting is the key in any succsesful act.

In the summer of 2005 I worked for Lawrence based Pipeline Productions. I helped promote shows in the Lawrence/Kansas City markets.

In the fall 2005 I worked for the short lived TM2 (Topeka Music Movement). When which I helped book and promote a couple area concerts.

Also in the fall of 2005 I booked and promoted a special show for music fans in Topeka. I got in touch with Kris Roe of The Ataris and booked him to play solo at The Boobie Trap Bar. On September 8th 2005 a sold out Boobie Trap Bar enjoyed the acousitc music of Kris Roe.

I then picked that point to transform my already existing Before We Spark Photography into Before We Spark Photography and Productions.

My current work includes working with Topeka rockers Echo Lake. I have spent the most hands on time with an acousitc act out of Lawrence, Nicki Smith.

Before We Spark Photography and Productions is a fusion of my two loves, photography and music. Much thanks to great Ultimate Fakebook for letting me use the title of their EP for my website. And thanks for the many years of rock!
